When the pandemic began, I asked myself what I could do to support others. I saw so many people on the news doing so many wonderful things to help, and then I wondered what can I do? Of course, I thought YOGA, what a great way to reduce stress and foster well-being. My idea was to bring Yoga to as many people as I could by volunteering my experience. From April to September 2020 I was busy finding ways to do just that, practicing socially together while being physically apart.
In total, I donated 103 classes gathering community in a variety of ways.
During the months of April and May I guided 55 classes of Driveway Yoga. Neighbours came out to their driveways while I walked up and down the street leading the practice through snow, wind, sun … you get the picture. People told me it was the highlight of their day.
Then came mid-June, the parks opened up to small groups (yippee) then off the street and into nature. I donated 40 classes with Yoga in the Park, people loved being outside in the early mornings.
Concerned for those who could not get out and for those who lived across the City, I decided to delve into technology with a whole new way of teaching via Zoom. I donated 8 classes reaching out to those at home who practiced alongside their dogs, cats and bunny rabbits.
I did this with a full and open heart while my business was put on hold. I am an active volunteer and as all my regular commitments had been cancelled, I was honoured to share my time in other ways.
I am now in the midst of rebuilding my business. As I am fully self-employed, I would truly appreciate if you could share and spread the word about my practice. At present all classes will be online, if Zoom is not your thing, perhaps it may be to someone in your circle, in your community, across the country or around the globe, that is the gift of technology.
This Accessible Gentle Yoga Practice is unique as I foster the classes with plenty of options to support those in the class, from gentler postures to more demanding. If experiencing an illness or injury, postures are modified accordingly. Unfortunately, I often find yoga classes have a one size fits all approach making it inaccessible to many.
